Tavira Property for sale
Tavira is stepped in history just by walking around the town you can make discoveries of your own. Records date back to the eighth century BC when the Phoenicians built a fortress on the hill now called Santa Maria. Its privileged position as an estuary town has ensured Tavira’s importance in the Eastern Algarve over the ages though mother nature has played its part in someway to its fall. The Rio Gilão siltted up and The Great Earthquake of 1755 flattened much of the town. The town was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and became a commercial harbour dominating the tuna fish industry, exporting dry fruits, salt extraction and wine to far flung places. Tourism took over as the main source of income in the 1970’s. In the city you will find a few small museums and archaeological exhibition usually open with events all year round.
